Caelan Doris Secures Spot in Irish Selection But Joe McCarthy Misses Out
Newly reappointed manager Andy Farrell has selected skipper Doris in his Irish squad for the fall matches, but Joe McCarthy has been excluded.
The captain, absent from play since having a shoulder operation in the start of May, has come back to Leinster training, but it remains unclear whether he will be ready to play against the All Blacks in the US on November 1.
Second row Joe McCarthy, on the other hand, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot injury he sustained during the opening British and Irish Lions match against Australia in the summer.
Northern province forward Izuchukwu and southern province wing Calvin Nash also miss out because of injury, while full-back Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after having hip surgery following the Lions tour.
Dublin province forward Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only uncapped member in the 34-player squad, but the Irish Rugby Football Union states uncapped Munster pair Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped western province winger Bolton will head to Chicago as "reserves".
Following facing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their 2016 meeting, the team host the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world title holders South Africa in the Irish capital.
"It's an exciting group to the panel and there's an opportunity for the veteran players and for the newcomers on the recent tour to Georgia and Portugal," commented Farrell, back to national team duties after a break to coach the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.
In a largely familiar-looking selection, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Crowley will once again vie for the first-choice number 10 spot. The number 10 jersey is remains available, as the two players set to face off for the first time in the upcoming United Rugby Championship match at the Dublin venue.
Frawley is the additional number 10 selected as the coach opting against selecting the province's Harry Byrne.
At number 9, Farrell has selected British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led the national side to the summer Test victories over Georgia and Portugal. Additionally, there is a return for Connacht's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to club-mate Murphy.
Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an veteran cohort of centre choices. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, but the 23-year-old is also a frontrunner to cover for the full-back at full-back.
Outside backs James Lowe, Mack Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are named. The winger shone on his national team debut over the summer with a brace each in the victories over Georgia and Portugal.
McCarthy is the only new addition in the Ireland forwards. The loose-head prop has been in two of Leinster's URC league games so far and played in the second string's defeat by England in the English city previously.
McCarthy was selected in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer squad, but did not receive a cap.
Southern province lock Thomas Ahern, who received his first two caps in those matches, is retained, and veteran Ulster lock Henderson is back after missing the summer tour.
Jack Conan, who played in each of the Lions matches over the summer, is set to deputise for Doris should the skipper fails to recover fitness soon enough to face New Zealand.
The Ireland squad will meet in the capital on the start of the week before flying to Chicago on the following day.
